Breakfast food

Pancakes, crispy hasbrowns, bacon, biscuits & gravy, eggs, coffee and cream...toast with butter...yummm!!! Breakfast is by far my favorite meal...and while I usually go with a bowl of cereal...it is the meal that I enjoy the most and the only meal that I could eat at any time of day...it's good for breakfast, lunch or dinner...so versatile! I am writing this to list a few of my favorite breakfast joints...usually if they have old school coffee mugs, it is going to be good!

I realize that I am only going to recommend a few places in a very limited geographic range, but these are the BEST that I have ever eaten at...and in general I go for the mom and pop places, not so much into the chain restaurant...so if you are in the area and are looking for the breakfast with personality...

KJ's Cafe, Trout Lake, WA - the original best breakfast you could ever get, specializing in huckleberry pancakes

Cameo Cafe, Portland - I recommend the coconut waffle...especially with butter, powdered sugar and lemon

Bijou Cafe, Portland - organic bacon and eggs!!

Cadillac Cafe, Portland - the hazelnut & banana french toast is killer

Fatty Patty's, Battleground - you're guaranteed a heart attack...but it's good stuff

Should you ever find yourself in Santa Rosa, CA, don't miss out on Hank's Creekside, everything's awesome and you can watch them cook your food

Brown Bag Cafe, Redmond, WA - huge portions, homemade bread

Pancake Corral, Bellevue - family owned business for 50 years...great service with a smile, a nice mom and pop atmosphere with great food...get there early or you'll be waiting outside

I must be hungry...

Didn't I have breakfast with you guys at KJ's Cafe in Troutlake? It was right after our summer internship in Myrtle Creek, and I drove Priscilla home. The next day, we had breakfast and I drove to Montana before heading back to ACU.

Speaking of Myrtle Creek, why no mentioning of Fat Harvey's? What a classic! Come on...you know, deep down, you miss eating next to a bunch off South County truckers.

yes, I considered Fat Harvey's...what it was back then, but that place doesn't exist any longer...now it is some luxury truck stop..not the grease, cholesterol, and smoke that made the food and conversation so delicious...I would definitely include the original Fat Harvey's

And I still like to go there when in MC, but it has conformed...and that's not good.

And what a shame that is...no more Fat's. Still, I'll never forget that first night with Jenny, Becky and Priscilla. Who would have known I was already hanging out with my future wife.

Jeb, check your church email. I sent you a message.

We are kindred spirits, you and I. I had breakfast for dinner last night at the Cracker Barrel. I know it's a chain, but even so, they have the yummiest biscuits and gravy--I always get the one with Chicken Fried Chicken (yes, I know that's stupidly redundant--but still funny).

I love the Bijou Cafe--I went there for lunch a few times with a coworker, it was "our" place.

Have you ever eaten at Mother's Bistro on 2nd & Stark in downtown Portland? All of their food is fantastic, especially their desserts, but their brunches are becoming legendary. (So is their Coconut Cream Pie and their Macaroni & Cheese du jour, but that's for another post.)

In Boise, the Trolly House is a veritable institution among breakfast lovers--pancakes the size of your torso! And Goldie's, across the street from my building, is quite good--just a little over-priced.

I.LOVE.BREAKFAST. I could eat breakfast all day everyday. THe Rolo doesn't like it so much. I always try to make pancakes for dinner, but he says no. {tear}

But my fav, as boring as it is, IHOP. MMMM... i love it! Rolo is very nice though and take me sometimes, but only for breakfast, and if i beg.

Growing up... I never really liked brkfst... but the older I get, the more I crave it! I don't always like it in the morning... more of a brunch, lunch, and dinner fan.

I'm with lisa on th IHOP thing! They have the yummiest harvest grain and nut panckaes. My Wieght Watcher friend tried to tell me that the sugerfree syrup was good too... that was a lie! Panckaes good, sugar free syrup BAD!

Just thought I'd give a breakfast service announcement!

I do like the Cracker Barrel...it is a good chain restaurant...I think Elmer's is a good chain restaurant too...I'm sorry lisa and kara because I don't share the same enthusiasm for IHOP, but Jeb would eat there every day if he could. I used to like Denny's when I was in college and we would go there for late night/all night study sessions, but it doesn't have the same thrill and excitement that it used to either. I know that you can't exactly judge food by the atmosphere, but aesthetics really helps my food taste better...so I think that is the one thing I look for in a good breakfast joint...and cleanliness is good too.

yeah, I'm with you on the "aesthetics really helps my food taste better" thing! I definatly only go to IHOP after highschool football games or REALLY late at night/early in the a.m.

When I can be distracted from the surroundings and the lack of cleanliness! But I urge you to try those pancakes!

Harvest grain and nut panckaes will make the sacrifice of GOING to IHOP worth it!

mmmm, all this talk of breakfast makes me hungry. seriously, each of those items that you described, pris, made my mouth water. eric never wants breakfast, i try to tell him that its the most important meal of the day, but he doesnt seem to care. i make a big breakfast every saturday, everything from waffles with strawberries to biscuits and gravy or coffee cake- whether he appreciates it or not! the last few months ive been making a big batch of muffins on sunday for us to grab on the way to work in the morning- very helpful and delicious. might i recomend this for any of you out there? switch it up, blueberry muffins, strawberry, chocolate chip...the possibilities are endless.

About your post on the swim pics...

Why did I leave you with the teens at the MC river? I think I wasn't big on river swimming. Besides, who knows what mysterious diseases lurk in the South Umpqua River. If I had gone in under the water, I would have likely come out with a mullet.

I'm watering at the mouth. I could eat breakfast any time! So could Isabel. Sometimes she has three breakfasts... Maybe it's because she doesn't want most of the other things I serve her... I keep intending to bake muffins but I want to have them hot and ready for the fam which means getting up at the buttcrack and I haven't been going to bed early enough... Where's my priorities?

Try the Maltby Cafe. If you go for breakfast on the weekend, get there when it opens or be prepared to wait.
